Identifying and Suppressing Street Gangs in Communities and Schools

Once predominantly an urban and city problem, Street Gangs - whether Los Angeles or Chicago styled, Ethnic
or Racist, Home Grown or National - have now migrated to small towns and rural communities throughout the
nation. As Gangs continue to expand their territories, there’s a need for a new level of law enforcement
awareness that moves beyond hype and myth. This training has been developed to provide officers –
regardless of assignment and locale – with an applicable awareness of street gang culture, expansion, and
methods of criminal activity. It’s designed to support an ethical and non-discriminatory response to criminal
and violent street gangs and youth groups frequently found in communities and schools.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
¦ A variety of methods that can be used to control, contain and suppress gang activity and violence.
¦ Various Gang types – Criminal and Youth,
will be reviewed generally, with more focus on those common to the jurisdictions represented in class.
¦ How to identifying true gang members and determine their 'street culture' to understand their mentality and propensity
for crime and violence.
¦ Targeted and ethical enforcement and prosecution strategies that can support gang control.
¦ A basic introduction to Gang graffiti to be able to identify and interpret its message.
* A CD that supports gang control and suppression is provided to each student *
The instructor has worked on and supervised a variety of gang investigations on various gang types during his career.
He has worked with community leaders, school officials and prosecutors to identify, classify, investigate and control gang
crime and violence in both communities and schools.
